30 Jan “What is ‘Internet’ Anyway?”

Due to a recent BMW spot, a 1994 clip from the Today Show featuring Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel debating the ‘intricacies’ of the Internet has surfaced. The pair just can’t seem to wrap their minds around the concept of the Internet. In fact, they appear to be slightly making fun of the idea itself. Both, presumably, thought the Internet was never going to turn into anything. Here’s the clip:

Well, they were wrong.

Looking back, it’s funny how something that the entire world is dependent on was once laughable. I’m sure initially figuring out what the Internet was was extremely difficult, but now it’s what connects communities from the US to Bangladesh. Moreover, it keeps both Couric and Gumbel relevant, as their work is shared all over the world.
