No Way. That Has To Be Photoshopped

Yesterday was Photoshop’s 25th anniversary. Like most major pieces of software or social media platforms, Photoshop’s conception derived from unusual means.

In fact, the creation of the most popular photo editing software in the world was influenced by a strong case of procrastination. Thomas Knoll was in the process of writing his thesis for his PhD when, just like any of us, he said, screw this, let me do something fun. Unlike any of us however, he used that time to build a digital empire, linking up with Adobe in 1988.

And no, he never did get that PhD.

Today, Photoshop is a media giant, having changed the digital landscape since inception. Media wouldn’t be the same without Photoshop’s presence. And with anything that affects our culture the way Photoshop has, there are always positives and negatives, but as Knoll said in his February 19th Reddit AMA, “Like any tool – a tool can be abused, or used properly. So it’s all about the ethics of the user, rather than the goodness or badness of the tool itself”.

So, in the spirit of celebration, Adobe has released a 60 second spot showing the depth of Photoshop’s abilities through this years Oscar nominations. The video can be found here.
