How To Post GIFs On Social Media

Posting on social media has become as routine as pouring a cup of morning coffee. It has become habitual. The new wave changing how we post on all social media platforms is Graphic Interchange Format, or more commonly known as GIFs. Animated GIFs are a great way to grab attention on any social media platform, as long as the social media marketer knows how to post properly.

We’ve all been there, you are about to post the perfect animated GIF, but it shows up as a static image. Understanding how animated GIFs behave differently on each social media network takes the old-fashion method of trial and error.

Facebook can be particularly complicated. For animated GIFs to be posted properly on Facebook, it needs to be done in one of the three ways:

  1. Convert a YouTube video into a GIF. The most common way this is done is through a third-party site, such as Viewrz.
  2. Use Animated Picture, a third-party app on Facebook. Unlike Viewrz where you choose your own files to upload, Animated Picture has an integrated library of GIFs to choose from.
  3. Post a direct link of the GIF. However, a moving image will not appear without clicking on the link.

The file size will need to be under 8MB for a Facebook GIF post.

Twitter is much easier to operate a GIF than Facebook; the social media platform supports GIFs directly by upload. Twitter also has a GIF library that a social media marketer can search and insert from. Twitter allows GIFs to be up to 5MB from a mobile upload and 15MB from a web upload.

Instagram and LinkedIN do not support importing animated GIFs, but both platforms support MP4 videos. Instagram will auto-play and loop, however, LinkedIN will need to be executed with a play button.
